• Tomcat is a web container built on the Apache server.
  • It is the box in which you run your web applications.
  • J2EE compliant, Apache Tomcat 7 supports:
    • JavaServer Pages spec 2.2
    • Java Servlet spec 3.0
  • Handles HTTP requests for you
    • No need to worry about the HTTP protocol, sockets, packets etc.
    • Your application just knows when it receives a HTTP request, what the request type is (GET, POST, HEAD etc) and what parameters/ headers were passed in.
  • Can run many web applications.
    • Applications can be easily packaged for distribution (WAR files).
    • Applications can be dropped into tomcat. Including while it is running.
